The most important and yet un-fun thing to do is establish a budget. When I meet with a new client the first thing I would like to know is how much do you plan on spending. I am more than happy to grasp there design vision from the cover of a magazine...but I know that room probably cost upwards of $20,000. So my question is how much do you want to spend?
Below are some tips on establishing your design budget.
- Shop your room. Find out how much things cost. Familiarize yourself with the cost of good quality furniture pieces. You can get a whole room of furniture for $799...but believe me you get what you pay for. Price the cost of window treatments, area rugs, and lighting. Also set a budget for the amount you would like to spend for accessories.
- Labor, don't forget to consider if you need a tradesman to help with your final transformation. A painter, carpenter, or an electrician to install that awesome drum shade pendant.
- Factor a cushion for incidentals, that way you will be prepared for those crazy "OMG" moments.
- If you need assistance in transforming your home and enlist the help of a designer knowing your budget will be imperative to the success of the project.
As with anything in life preparation isn't the most fun or glamorous chore, but good preparation leads to very successful results. So to get started download my introduction packet, you will find an awesome HGTV article and a budget worksheet to help get you started.
